    posts

I have been really bad about posting. Basically giving up on it. But then this last weekend I was fixing my parent's computer and noticed Mom had this space listed in her favorites. So since Mom is watching I better start posting again.

We're headed to Vancouver BC this weekend and then Europe shortly after, so look for photos soon.

    Goin' Back to Cali

2 posts in a row that reference LL. Must be some kind of record, no I'm not especially proud of it.

We're staying a a gorgeous sprawling hose near the mouth of the Carmel river with Jennifer's cousins. Pictures will be posted soon. Main events have been drinking eating and storytelling. We're here to celebrate the life of one of Jennifer's cousins. With us is her husband and one of her best friends -- Jennifer's greandmother. I've always had ties to this part of California, but its wonderful to hear the memories and stories of the older generation as we drive by their old haunts and favorite places.

    TK in Vegas

Check out TKs brushes with fame while hosting the blogger lounge at CTIA. I think this blogger lounge is a new company trademark. And no, the closest thing I had to a celebrity run in at the velvet lounge in January was Robert Scoble (blogger extrodianre) and Jay Greene (BusinessWeek). I think TK's Steve Largent and LL Cool J win. Sorry Jay and Robert.

    perspective

Well over a month since a post. I'd like to think all of my creativty is spent on endeavors other than posting to the dozen or so people who read this thing, but not sure that is true.

Oh muse, inspirerer of deep thoughts, whitty reflections, and insightful obervations, where are thou?

A few moments of genius have come through at work, they tend to include exploding gas lines, lampooning shy clients, helping disabled Iraq verterans get access to technology. But then there was the unintentional email embarrasing a coworker in front of 350 employees and it all comes back into perspective.

What do you tell a Californian moving to Oregon?

What do you tell a Californian moving to Oregon? No, I will not accept "Tell them to go back where they came from." These are friends of mine and they'll make better Oregonians than most of us.

So, Scott and Julie I hope you are reading this. Here are the top rules for living in Oregon:

    • Starbucks is what you have on your way to work, Stumptown is what you have when you go out to get cofee.
    • Umbrellas (or bumbershoots in WA) are only for tourists or home decor.
    • Salmon is the new chicken.
    • The word "commute" implies a bicycle, not a freeway
    • Seasonal Affective Disorder happens in the summer, not in the winter,  because  (a) the soccer fields are dangerously full of gopher holes (b) there is not enough mud to really test those new knobbies (c) you have to water the yard (d) you have nothing to wear to work because it is to warm for fleece.
    • Multnomah not Multiiiinomah, Orygun not Orugone, Willaaaaamette not Willumet.
    • Boring is a place, not a state of being
    • Pink Martini is the hippest band ever, even though you've never seen them play.
    • Watching professional football amounts to seeing which Beavers and Ducks get picked up on Draft day.
    • You've never been to , nor know anyone who has ever been to PF Changs, California Pizza Kitchen, Outback Steakhouse or the Cheescake Factory -- yet they are always packed,  must be tourists from Cali.
    • Sandwiches made from non-organic, non family owned bakery bread are ghetto.
    • Merlot . . . we all know what we thik of Merlot.

Once you've read this list, test yourself against the How You Know You're From NorthWest check list.

    Anything missing?

Girl Scout Cookies? Let me make some suggestions.

Last year I was a big fan of the Samoas. For those  without a pusher in your neighborhood, a Samoa is basically a twix bar shaped into a ring with cononut mixed in to the caramel.

This year the rather conventional but tasty All Abouts top my list as the 2006 Girl Scout Cookie of the Year. The All About is a dlectable slab of shortbread with half the cookie dipped in a slightly darker than normal, but not quite dark, chocolate.

The DoSiDo's are moving back up on to my favorites list also. The little peanut chunks baked right in put them a step ahead of the the classic NutterButter.

Where are the Thin Mints? They made my list last year -- below the Samoas -- but I'm just not feeling the mint this year.

Please send me your recomendations so I can adjust my order for next year.

    Conspiracy Theory

This weekend the Bush administration released photos of GW with Abranoff. If you were doing their PR what would you do? or what woudl Karl Rove do? Have a senior administration officiall accidentally shoot someone. So a politically benign, though somewhat tragic, story gets all of the coverage and the Abranoff scandal quiets down for a while?

Do I believe this, no. But the timing was too good to be true for Bush.

My CD collection is on TV

Okay not really, in fact I wasn't a pop music fan in the 80s.

I'm watching the Olympics opening ceremonies and every song is straight from The Retro's play list.

    December 20

    About last night . . .

In the 80's my favorite band was U2. Loved Unforgettable Fire and Boy.  I've seen U2 a couple of times, but last nights show was the best.  Bono was a bit scratchy at times, but he was very energized, and the production value was amazing.

Curtains of LED lights backed the stage like macrame beads that changed colors and insynchonicity to act as giant video screens.

Like the Elevation tour, a ramp circlular ramp extended 1/2 way around the Rose Garden floor.

I was also very impressed by Time's person of the year on how he integrated policrtical and social messages into the sets. throughout the show he would talk about issues and then choose a song to play that reflected the issue.

At one point he asked people to text message thgeir names to sign up in support of his human rights program. Many of the people who signed up had their names displayed on giand video screens around the arena, including the Pink Hobbit. Congratulations Kathleen, my thumbs were too slow to sign up.

    Celebrity sightings 1 -23

     by popular request, some highlights:

#1  6 years old - Cllint Eastwood in CO while filming one of his monkey movies
#2  9 years old - Sitting next to Gerald Ford on an airplane (SFO to Wash Dulles)
    # 7 Carl Lewis working out at the track at City College of San Jose
#8 Jerry Rice at a Photo Hut in San Mateo CA

    More recent . . .
#14 James Brown and a very sleazy looking entourage at the Fairmont SF.
#18 Scottie Piippen, at Cafe duBerry in Portland
#21 John Madden on a street corner in Carmel ,CA

    others:
Art Alesakis (formerl;y of Everclear)- multiple sightings, not sure he gets celbrity status.

And the one that perplexes me - Jimmy Buffet (maybe) at Willamette Park. A shorter man in his late 40's early 50s and a taller blonde women were walking along the river. The man looked like Jimmy and was wearking a pastel shirt and khaki shorts with sandals. The woman called him James. When I made eye contact he gave that nod and smile like he knew I recognized him. I was too much of a wimp to ask if it was him.

    Celebrity sighting #24

This morning, I walked into the Fifth Avenue Suites, no not my house which is also on Fifth Ave., but the hotel in Portland.   Kevin Garnett was standing in the doorway talking on his cell phone. As I approached he opened the door for me and held it opened while I passed through. He even smiled, well sort of.

A number of other T-Wolves were in the lobby, to, but Can't say I'm following much NBA this season, so I didn't recognize msot of them.

    History lesson in the making?

In June, we visited Philadelphia for a wedding. One of the things I wanted to do was visit Independence Hall and the other historical buildings.

I ended up being really disappointed in the displays, information and general upkeep and opportunities to learn. We had to listen to one ranger read from a note card that the struggles for independence in the 1770s have the same noble goals as today's sturggle for independence in Iraq. I so wanted to ask the ranger if we were the revolutionaries or the British in his analogy. Poor guy was reading something he was obviously forced to, so I passed.

For every park ranger that was employed to answer questions or tell about the history of a buidling there were at least 10 more manning barricades, frisking you or working metal detctors. Be interesting to see the National Park Service budget to find out how much was being spent on security versus education and preservation.

this cartoon from today's paper sums it up nicely.
    December 01

It's just cool in a Fantasia, kind of way.

About 10 years ago I was working in makreting for a very small computer hardware company. 15 employees small. Wel after some good lagework I secured a positive review in PC Magazine. Sales immediately trippled.

For the company I was working at  it was a huge boon. But good coverage can also be problematic.

David Pogue wrote in his NYT column this week about a guy who produced multimedia art. Securing coverage in the Times is fantastic, most of the time. Problem is is that everyone all of a sudden wanted to see this art and the traffic was so high it shut down his Website for days. I just checked now and the site is back up. http://www.animusic.com/ He probably had to find a new host and rebuild it in the last 48 hours.

Good PR is important, but you have to be ready for it.

In the resaturant business a 5-star revioew can kill a restarant. Expectations get set to high, regulars can't get in to the place, kitchen can't keep up, staff gets overworked and quality drops. The restaruant burns itself out in just over a year or two.

Check out http://www.animusic.com/ its just cool.
